Is Islaam Just Theoretical?

“This religion is not a theory that people learn from a book to enjoy its intellectual subtleties and to boast about their knowledge. Nor is it a negative faith that is confined to a relationship between human beings and their Lord. On the other hand, it is not merely a set of worship practices which people offer to their Lord.

This religion is a general declaration for the liberation of mankind. It takes a realistic and practical approach that employs suitable means to confront any human situation. When it is impeded by obstacles of understanding, it speaks out, making its message absolutely clear.

But when it faces the impediments of social systems and tyrannical authorities, it confronts them with a physical struggle, launching a campaign of jiahd to destroy all tyranny and establish Allaah’s authority in its place. (1)”

[Fee Zhilaal Al-Quraan [English trans.], by Sayyid Qutb, 7/135]

Footnotes:

(1) This last paragraph may seem odd to some non-Muslims. To make it easier to understand, I will add my explanation to his speech here: “But when it faces the impediments of social systems and tyrannical authorities,” meaning, when the Muslims are being abused and tortured unjustly, ”it confronts them with a physical struggle,” as any other human being would do when he is being abused or physical threatened, “launching a campaign of jiahd” i.e, to strive and struggle, ”to destroy all tyranny” as no country, whether Musim or non-Muslim, is safe and peaceful if its rulers are tyrannical and unjust, “and establish Allaah’s authority in its place.” Meaning, to replace the unjust and barbaric laws of the tyrant who abuses its citizens, and to replace them with the laws of God, giving justice to all its citizens.
